KELOID REMOVAL

Working Together To Achieve The Best Treatment Results

Keloids are formed from an overgrowth of fibrous scar tissue that occurs as a result of an injury. They are caused by an excess of collagen protein that is present during the healing process. They usually appear smooth, shiny and firm and tend to be larger than the original wound. Although keloids do not affect your health adversely, they can be a cosmetic concern for some people. A consultation is required to assess the keloid removal and can then be decided if it is a medical or cosmetic issue.

A wide variety of skin injuries may cause keloids to form, such as:

  • Scratches that are deep
  • Surgical incision sites
  • Ear piercing and other body piercings
  • Burns
  • Tattoos
  • Acne scars

Genetics plays a role in determining who may develop a keloid scar. If one or both parents have keloid scars, then the risk is increased that you will develop a keloid scar as the result of a skin injury at some point in life. People with darker complexions are also more prone to develop keloids.

Treatment for Keloid Scars

There are several treatment options when trying to reduce or minimize a keloid scar. Steroid injections can be placed in the keloid to help shrink the scar tissue and this is performed in a series of injections approximately 1 month apart. The corticosteroid injections can relieve the symptoms of keloids and make them feel softer.

Some keloids can be treated surgically; however, there is a risk that the keloid may return. Complexions Dermatology offers both injection therapy and surgical removal of keloid scars. Once we examine your scar, we can develop a treatment plan to help reduce the size and some of the associated symptoms of keloid, such as pain and itching. We will work together to help you get the best results from treatment.
